In general, the guidelines within the EU are:
1. Pedal assist (a.k.a. pedelec) only, no throttle. The motor must kick in only when you manually cycle.
2. Motor cutoff above 25km/hr
3. Motor limit of 250W
Some EU countries implemented these rules, others didn't. Some enforce these rules with mobile test units, others don't. If you're involved in an accident - they might investigate your bike thoroughly and find that you broke the law, or they might not.
As a Nireeka owner, I want to follow some/all laws, but, want flexibility for private land, or other circumstances like moving country. I might want to have the throttle one day, and I don't want it the next day. I might want a 250W motor for the roads, and a 500W motor for my farm or private track. Due to the EU laws, this flexibility touches on a number of items, as it's 3 main points.
If I have a homie, can I simply remove the throttle? [yes. unknown: will the motor still be usable? or do I need to install a throttle alternative like thumb buttons etc.]
Can I replace it with a thumb button? [probably]
Will the bare metal of the handlebar be exposed, or can I buy a rubber grip to cover where the throttle once was? [unknown]
Do I need a new ECU to switch from throttle to PAS/buttons? [probably not.]
2. SPEED LIMIT 25 km/Hr
Can this be set/adjusted/removed in the app? [yes]
In the EU Homie is this restriction implemented in the ECU? [yes]
Can I remove the restriction in the EU homie using the app? [probably not]
In the non-EU Homie, can I set the restriction in the ECU? [probably not]
So, are all ECU's the same (both EU and non-EU) [probably not]
Can I set the output wattage in the app? [probably]
Can I easily replace a 250W wheel with a 500W wheel? [Yes! New perk added!]
Will Nireeka sell all supporting parts separately, such as
- twist throttle
- thumb throttle
- Handlebar grip
- EU ECU
- Non-EU ECU
- 250W wheel [08/04/2018 - YES!]
- 500W wheel [08/04/2018 - YES!]
I hope that I can get answers to these, I have answered them to the best of my knowledge as you can see in the square brackets. These answers are based on email exchanges below, comment replies, and the ingiegogo page. I can tell from the comments on the indiegogo page that people had similar questions and want what I want - the ability to be EU compliant when necessary with the option of being unrestricted when desired. As private individuals we take responsibility for our actions, and I don't encourage breaking the law of your local authority.
I have sent emails and comments to Nireeka, and they have been good at responding, however I still do not have 100% clarity on all questions above. Here are additional points they sent me, which I think is good to share with you all.
we have to say even sky is not the limit :) We (or anyone) can customize the Nireeka eBikes to meet any preferences. And we fully understand and aware of all the points you mentioned (Geeky like us!), but correctly as you pointed out, we didn’t want to get too technical in our campaign to avoid further confusions.
Yes, you can limit the max speed using the app but in some countries this is not enough to convince the customs or even a police officer!
Yes, Installing a throttle is a piece of cake.
[From indiegogo update: Top Speed 25 km/h (EU Homie Only)
[Regarding Ped Assist] We just removed the throttle. That’s it.
We are going to add a new perk containing an extra wheel equipped with the 500 W motor shortly. The only thing you need to do is to swap the wheels.
PS I really hope I can update the answers in this post when I get more answers in the replies.
